Western European Diesel Car Market
September Saw Diesel Share in the Region Fall Below 30%
- August’s diesel share of new car sales in the region, including diesel hybrid, is confirmed at 30.7%. September saw this figure dip to a preliminary 29.0%, not expected to alter much on receipt of all data. The month was dragged down by a poor diesel result in the UK, September being a large and hence influential, sales month in that market overall. Year‐to‐date regional diesel share was 32.2%, 0.4pp down on the same metric for August. YoY decline came in at ‐4.2pp, consistent with recent data, and in line with an unvarying rate of decline since the beginning of this year. It seems clear that the worst is over for now.
- While the UK and some smaller markets saw disappointing diesel demand in September, other markets fared better. France’s result at 35.6% was the strongest since May and Germany, including diesel hybrid, continued to achieve above 30%, coming in at 31.2%. This is down from recent months, but not significantly. The KBA figure for diesel share in September, which doesn’t take account of sales of diesel hybrids, was 29.6%. Most of the hybrid sales are mild, and so are very closely related to conventional diesel cars. Italy continues to adjust, but the rate is slowing and September’s share was close to that of July. Spain’s diesel market was buoyant in September, achieving the best result since December 2018.
